This summer, Starbucks' Refreshers drinks may cost extra. The restaurant has acknowledged that it now charges extra for the "no water"
customisation on these fruity, Instagram-worthy cocktails, which range from Strawberry Açaí to Mango Dragonfruit.
"Starting May 9 there will be an additional cost of $1 for Starbucks Refreshers Beverages customized with no water, as this customization requires extra ingredients,"
a Starbucks spokeswoman said. This modification makes customisation more uniform, such adding an espresso shot or syrup, which cost extra.
Classic Refreshers blend flavored drink base with water. No-water customizing gives customers more Refresher base for a stronger flavor.
Late last month, rumors circulated that the coffee chain will charge for Refreshers with light or no ice and the no-water customization.
Starbucks denied the light ice and no-ice charges, but it didn't disclose the extra no-water price until now.
Drink "modifiers" such added syrup and sauces have earned the firm $1 billion annually.
While Starbucks benefits from the upcharge, many consumers are unhappy that they'll be paying for the formerly free personalization.
